INTRONowadays everybody owns a mobile phone but back in the 70's it was unheard of. But this guy Marty, well he was a different guy. He was super smart at electrical engineering and made the first truly mobile cell phone. Sure it went for about $4000 but it was still a success. Marty left Motorola and made his own company and from there the industry grew and grew until today.

BIOMartin Cooper also known as Marty Cooper was born in December 26, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He was an American engineer who made the first cellular phone in 1973 but it didn't make it to the market until 1980. He graduated from Illinois Institute of technology in 1950 getting bachelor degree in electrical engineering. During the Korean war he was in the US Navy. Marty started working at Motorola in 1954 before that he worked at teletype. Later he got a masters in electrical engineering at the same university and continued to work at Motorola. Marty worked on many projects besides the mobile phone including hand-held police radios and radio controlled traffic light system.
Cell Phone After making the cell phone Marty made the first call to his competitors in Bell Lab Research and gloated about calling from a truly mobile phone. Later Marty cited the Star Trek communicators as inspiration. The phone was 800 g and was nicknamed the "Brick" for obvious reasons.
Education Martin Cooper went to the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). He completed his bachelors in electrical engineering in 1950 and later went back and got his masters in 1957. In 2004 he received an honorary doctorate award from the IIT, which was the least they could do after he invented the first mobile cell phone!
